Getting started and nameservers
Last updated
dns.lgbt answers the DNS questions about your domain: which server your website, mail and everything else are on. Your domain stays registered where it is; you only tell your registrar that our nameservers answer for it.
1. Add your domain
In the app, choose + next to “Domains” and type the domain as you registered it, like example.org, without www or https://. You can add records right away; we start answering for it once it is active.
2. Point the nameservers at us
The domain’s Records page shows our nameservers, like ns1.dns.lgbt and ns2.dns.lgbt. Sign in at your registrar (where you bought the domain), find the nameserver settings (often “DNS”, “Nameservers” or “Delegation”), choose custom nameservers and enter at least two of ours, and only ours. All of them are fine too. Remove any others.
Your registrar passes them on to the registry of the top-level domain. That can take from a few minutes to a day. We check regularly and activate the domain as soon as the registry names only our nameservers; you get an email or a notice in your inbox.
A new domain has to be active within 24 hours, or we remove it again so nobody holds a name they don’t own. You can add it again at any time.
3. Add your records
Copy the records you had at your old DNS provider, so nothing breaks when the nameservers change: add them one by one, or import a zone file. See Records and zone import.
